Burst pipes are not only a winter problem. Old galvanized pipe rusts from the inside, copper pinholes, push-fit and compression fittings let go, and a corroded valve can fail any day of the year. For splits caused by cold, see the frozen pipe page.
How the crew handles a pipe failure
The first job is stopping the flow. Once the main valve is closed, the tech who does the walkthrough maps every wet surface, because water from a pressure leak runs along joists and drips out far from the break.
- The extraction crew clears standing water from every floor it reached
- The tech checks ceilings below with thermal imaging and meters
- The crew removes saturated ceiling drywall that is sagging or holding water
- Air movers and dehumidifiers go into the opened walls, ceilings and subfloor
