A sump pump only helps while it runs, and the stretches when it stops are the dangerous ones. In March 2010 firefighters pumped residential basements around the clock, and the fire chief said residents had bought pumps, so a pump that fails in high water leaves little margin.
What the crew does after a failure
The crew follows the steps of basement flooding cleanup, starting with the power, then lowers the water with a submersible pump and extracts what remains. Wet carpet, pad and the bottoms of drywall are removed, and the first readings show how far the water climbed.
- Float switch and discharge are checked for jams
- Power source and outlet are noted for the claim
- Water depth marks on walls are photographed
- Stored items are moved up and out first
