Homes here draw water from the City of Fitchburg system through the town Water Department, but the pipes inside each house belong to the owner, and when one fails the water follows gravity. A burst pipe can soak a floor and reach the ceiling below before anyone notices.
Two floors, one leak
A supply pipe under pressure moves a great deal of water. It runs along the subfloor, finds the seams and drops through the ceiling below, where it soaks insulation and drywall. The crew follows the path with meters from the break outward, because dry-looking spots often hide wet framing.
- The valve is closed at the main or the fixture.
- Standing water is extracted from the leak floor.
- The ceiling is opened where water collected above the drywall.
- Walls and subfloor are dried room by room with daily readings.
