In March 2010 the Fire Department pumped many flooded basements around town, and in some of them water entered the house faster than the pumps could move it. That history explains why pulling standing water off low floors is the first job on most calls.
How the pump-out is staged
A crew starts with submersible pumps where the water is deep, then switches to truck-mounted extractors and weighted wands once only a film remains on the slab or floor. When the ground outside is saturated, the technician lowers the water in steps so the walls are never left holding wet soil against an empty room.
- Submersible pumps handle depth, and the discharge hose runs well away from the foundation.
- Truck-mounted extractors lift water out of carpet, pad and tile joints.
- Wet pad and loose trim come out when they cannot be dried where they lie.
- A moisture map records where the water traveled so equipment can be set room by room.
