Pumps were overwhelmed in some basements in March 2010, when water entered houses faster than the Fire Department's pumps could work. The December 2008 ice storm was declared an emergency in town, a reminder that storms test every backup a house has.
Why a sump pump stops
A pump fails for ordinary reasons. A float switch sticks, the motor wears out, the outlet goes dead or the inflow beats the pump's capacity. When that happens in a storm, groundwater fills the pit and spills onto the slab.
- A stuck float switch that never starts the motor.
- A power outage with no battery backup.
- A clogged intake or a frozen discharge pipe.
- Heavy rain that simply outruns the pump.
