A tank can weep slowly at a fitting or let go all at once, and in either case the water heads for the lowest part of the floor and the base of the nearest walls. Clean supply water becomes a bigger problem the longer it sits.
Where the water goes
In an unfinished basement the water crosses the slab toward the drain, soaking boxes and the bottoms of stud walls. On a finished floor it slips under carpet and baseboards. On an upper floor it soaks the subfloor and drips into the ceiling below.
- Stored items are lifted off the wet floor.
- Water is extracted from the slab or the carpet.
- Baseboards come off and small openings are cut at the wall bottoms.
- Air movers and a dehumidifier dry the area.
